Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Developed by Dr. Steven Hayes in the 1980’s, and growing in popularity since, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a natural response to when changing our thoughts doesn’t quite lead to the results we hoped for.
ACT is based on the assumption that difficult experiences and emotions are a part of life, that it’s human nature to avoid pain, and that this tendency of ours to avoid inevitably leads to more problematic behavior. Rather than getting caught in an exhausting cycle of avoidance, an ACT therapist can help you practice mindful awareness of your thoughts and emotions, practice acceptance of difficult emotions, and move forward with concrete action based on your personal values.
