Wondering About Sessions
-
Depending on what you’re coming to see a dietitian for, you can expect the first session to be a “get to know each other session” where goals and expectations are outlined, but the overall outcome of this session is to understand what it is your seeking from nutritional therapy and what has brought you to this point. The initial session is 60-90 minutes (depending on insurance). Follow up sessions are either 50 minutes or 25 minutes.
Bamboo Nutrition is all about growth and confidence. Change takes time, and there is no quick fix. Sessions can be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly based on your dietitian’s recommendation. Each session we will discuss your goals and progress, make a plan for how to continuing striving towards those goals, discuss new interests that arise, and provide you with education on nutritional topics you are most interested in. Lab values can be reviewed together, as well as other medical nutrition complications you may be going through.
-
Our nutrition and therapy sessions are typically one hour long.
-
The frequency and duration in which we will meet is completely individualized based on your needs and goals. Typically we begin working with clients on a weekly basis to not only build trust, rapport, and connection with each other, but to lay the foundation. When we begin to space out sessions, you know what to practice on your own and feel confident in being consistent in these challenges and working towards your goals. Meeting every other week is common at this stage. For long-term clients, a monthly check-in is recommended as long as needed until you feel comfortable maintaining your goals and progress. Then we proceed to 2-3month check-ins and the last check in will be 6months after that.
-
Yes. Bamboo Nutrition personalizes everything to your individual needs, goals, and communication-style.
-
We provide sessions online and in person depending on your geographical location. You may also choose to do a combination of in person and online depending on what is most convenient for you.
-
There is nothing you need to prepare or bring with you to your first session. If you struggle to know where to start or what to say, your provider will guide the conversation with questions pertaining to your primary concerns.
We do ask that you complete all the pre-initial paperwork online before your session. You will receive instructions on how to do this once we create your client portal and get you scheduled.
-
Progress can feel difficult to see sometimes. We ask that you trust our providers’ professional skills as they may be able to identify progress in you and challenge you in other ways to keep you on a trajectory of personal growth to meet your goals.
Goals may also change, and it is common for you and your provide to revisit goals, talk about progress and make adjustments to your treatment plan.
-
If a provider has a waitlist, we will give you our best approximation on when they will have availability then give you a call as soon as they have an opening.
-
Thank you for asking this question. We try to be very forthcoming about what we do and how we like to work with our clients at Bamboo Nutrition.
Being a private practice dietitian is much different from being in the hospital or outpatient clinic. We love to get to know our clients more and establish a stronger relationship, similar to a relationship you’d have with your therapist.
Maybe you feel “I don’t need a strong relationship with my dietitian. I just want some questions answered.” If this is the case, we may not be the right fit for you. The clients we work with may have many different things going on in their lives that impact their relationship with food. We do not simply provide a meal plan or provide handouts and see you only 3-4 times per year.
Our clients report strong outcomes and successes in working with us because they take the time to make their nutrition and health a priority. By going deeper in sessions, taking the time to meal plan, grocery plan, think about barriers to follow-through and discuss your history and current relationship with food, you will be more likely to have sustainable, long-term improvements with your health.
-
Our providers do lead groups and classes from time to time. To see the complete list of current options, please visit our Groups and Classes page.
Groups and classes can be a wonderful idea for additional support or ongoing support if you are looking for a change from individual sessions.
Groups require a different level of effort and can help you to experience more progress by challenging you in different ways than individual sessions can. Talk to your provider to see if group may be a good next step for you.
About Us & Our Philosophies
-
A registered dietitian is considered an expert in all things nutrition. A dietitian (dietician) is trained in many different areas but specializes in specific forms of treatment. For example, chronic disease, eating disorders, sports, food management, pregnancy, etc. At Bamboo Nutrition, our dietitians specialize in medical nutrition therapy for eating disorders, diabetes, kidney disease, GI disorders, healthful eating, and other chronic disease states. We work closely with our clients in-person and online to ensure you are achieving adequate nutrition and optimal health. Not only do we like to get to know our clients in more than just how and what you like to eat, but we provide you with education and skills that fit your needs, goals and lifestyle. A dietitian has many skills when it comes to food and nutrition and we love to share this with our clients in a meaningful way.

A Nutritionist is not a legal title regulated by states. Nutritionists can come from a diverse background, whether nutrition is learned in an online course, or self-taught. Nutritionists may or may not have a bachelors degree in nutrition.
Registered Dietitian is a legal title that is regulated by your state. You will see the credentials: RD or RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist) followed by LD if they are a licensed dietitian (recognized by your state). Not all states require licensure and it is within these states that there is higher risk for receiving false nutrition information by a nutritionist. A RD earns a bachelors and a masters degree in dietetics and nutrition as well as experiencing a 1200 hour supervised internship where they learn how to implement their skills in a clinical, community, and food management setting.
Although there are some nutritionists who can provide helpful tips and resources, their background in nutrition is inconsistent and unregulated. It is up to you to chose how to best spend your time, money and trust. For complicated diagnoses and specific questions pertaining to your health and nutrition, it is best to seek advice from a registered dietitian.

Health at every size, abbreviated HAES, is a form of practicing healthcare that does not stigmatize or make assumptions of an individual based on their weight and shape. Those who practice HAES see weight as only a number, not a risk factor or health marker. HAES practitioners understand that an individual can be metabolically “healthy” at any weight and shape and serve all their patients with compassion, respect, and sensitivity.

Intuitive Eating is based off of 3 pillars: 1. Emotions 2. Instincts and 3. Thought; Think of this making a triangle. The rational thought can interfere with emotions and with instinct. This is often where diet culture misleads us and causes the rational thought to conflict with instinct and emotion.
If you put all three together, you get the best ability to listen to yourself. You will listen to your instinct to survive, listen to your hunger and fullness signals (the rational part of your brain) and listen to your emotions. Intuitive Eating is more complex than just eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. It is the balance between the three pillars that make up our food decisions.
To learn more about intuitive eating, consider purchasing the book and learning more from the intuitive eating website.

Consider how many times per day you eat, think about food, meal plan, grocery shop, cook, etc. Food impacts your life in many different ways. After you have done some form of movement, you find yourself hungry or thirsty. To improve health you may learn about different nutritional supplements you need to take. As you age, you learn that your body has different nutritional needs. If you go out with friends or family, there is often food involved.
Need I go on? Food impacts every part of our lives, and therefore nutrition therapy bleeds into all areas of your lifestyle and can provide opportunity to make lifestyle improvements in many different areas.
There are topics that dietitians are not trained to explore, such as things pertaining to therapy and mental health. However, dietitians can be helpful when it comes to movement, navigating social situations around food, and body image concerns.
Overall, we hope that by working with our dietitians, you experience overall lifestyle improvement.
-
Absolutely. We have a large team of dietitians therefore we have the ability to pair you with the person who has the most experience, knowledge and ability to meet your individual needs and goals.

General Questions
-
We work with all ages. Nutrition starts young, we know this, but it also continues to change as we age so there may be clients we see at one stage in their life, then we work with them again later. This is why we form strong relationships with our clients, so they know we are always here for them when they need us.

Meeting with a dietitian can look different anywhere you go. What nutrition therapy looks like at Bamboo Nutrition is one-on-one conversations over your beliefs, concerns, and knowledge around nutrition and health. Nutrition therapy does not offer cookie-cutter advice; It goes deeper and gets to the roots of your frustrations. Rather than a bullet-point or routine visit, nutrition therapy is a more in depth process that allows the dietitian and the client to navigate how nutrition fits into your life specifically. What are your goals? How do you want your relationship with food and exercise to look? Bamboo Nutrition takes the time to answer these questions for you in a way that creates long-lasting achievements and a refreshed mindset around nutrition and health.
-
At Bamboo Nutrition we use the terms “Nutrition Therapy” and “Nutrition Counseling” interchangeably.
The important thing to know is at Bamboo Nutrition we strive to build deeper connections with our clients in order to understand your daily challenges and long-term health goals. We take more time getting to know our clients because we see this having the best long-term impact on their confidence in making food decisions, improvement in body image, and evidenced-based knowledge about nutrition.
-
Nutrition can have a big impact on a person’s mental health, as well as the other way around. Mental health can have a big impact on how a person nourishes their body.
For this reason, Bamboo Nutrition takes a more therapeutic approach in our sessions with dietitians. We also have therapists at Bamboo Nutrition who are specialized in helping individuals with food concerns. Having both a dietitian and a therapist on your treatment team can be very helpful if you’re struggling with mental health.
-
Family nutrition is exactly that, focusing on nutrition for the entire family and how to improve it in the context of family meals, power struggles, feeding little ones, meal planning, etc. Whether it is a behavioral issue, or a medical need, we can help guide you through how to best feed your family and meet everyone’s needs.
When it comes to behavioral or picky eaters, we use the Ellyn Satter approach to feeding. Raising little ones to be independent and aware of how to make nourishing food choices is something we focus on with you as a long term goal.
If you have a medical need in your family, we can help you make nutrition more simple through meal planning and giving you the tools you need to feel confident in how you feed yourself and your loved ones.
-
Yes. Our dietitians work with all ages. If you’re wondering about children and teens, depending on the relationship the child has with their parents, we include parents (guardians) in the nutrition therapy process.
Children and teens may work with our dietitians for reasons such as malnutrition, GI conditions, allergies and intolerances, growth concerns, picky eating, eating disorders, tube feeds, chronic illness, and more.
-
Emotional eating is a common disordered eating behavior that our eating disorder dietitians and intuitive eating dietitians are very familiar with treating.
Emotional eating is often a symptom of larger problems beneath the surface. It is typically recommended to also work with a therapist to unpack these deeper concerns.
The dietitian will provide you with insight into your intake or thought process around food that may lead to more emotional eating or other eating behaviors.
-
Speaking only on behalf of the dietitians at Bamboo Nutrition, our dietitians do not provide meal plans unless necessary for individual treatment plans and goals.
Despite what many people believe, meal plans are not necessary to adjust intake in a positive way. Our dietitians provide education, specific recommendations, and help you to feel very confident in making food decisions on your own.
Our dietitians have a lot of experience in improving behaviors related to eating, such as emotional eating, stress eating, dieting, restriction, binge eating, eating in secret, etc. and will address these issues as they come up and help navigate strategies to improve these behaviors and replace them with healthier ones.
-
At Bamboo Nutrition we are a non-diet focused group. Often when clients want meal plans, this could mean very different things. Our dietitians do have meal plans, but these are more for individuals with eating disorders or specific diseases or conditions that require specific recommendations on quantity, and types of nutrition.
For the majority of clients, although there is comfort in having a dietitian tell you exactly what to eat, this does not provide you with education, confidence and often feels like another diet. Rather than give you a specific meal plan, we challenge you to make general meal plans yourself and offer guidance and education to increase your confidence in making these food decisions.
-
Our approach is to be as inclusive as possible. We care about your relationship with food and often extremely restrictive meal plans hurt that relationship.
Our specialized dietitians will ensure that a proper allergy test was done and determine if the tests were evidenced-based. If they were not, or only show an intolerance, we will work with you to determine the symptoms and limitations that food may have, but we try not to just exclude food unless there is strong evidence to do so.
The biggest complaint from our allergen clients is how difficult it is to eat at a restaurant, find something to eat when at a gathering or with friends, or the overlapping and contradictory diet plans online. Given all those extremely important concerns, we strive to reintroduce foods as soon as possible, monitor symptoms and severeness and help you meal plan and problem solve situations that may arise.
Because nutrition therapy is so personalized, your dietitian will take all the time you need to answer questions, determine necessity of dietary guidelines and help you with all the daily challenges of grocery shopping, meal planning, cooking, eating out, etc.
-
Hydration is an important part of health. This is assessed with all clients who are seeing a dietitian at Bamboo Nutrition. Hydration may be more of a topic of conversation for individuals with chronic diseases where hydration is highly impacted.
-
Absolutely. Working with a dietitian specialized in your concerns will be especially helping in managing, or resolving, your chronic condition(s).
Nutrition is medicine for many illnesses and it is a grave assistant to many conventional medical treatments. In other words, nutrition may not resolve the condition completely, but it can improve and decrease symptoms for many issues.
-
If you are on medications, this will be a question on your intake paperwork and your dietitian will review it and let you know if they have any concerns about nutrient-medication interactions.
Many clients come to our dietitians with the goal of reducing medications, this can be a wonderful goal that is completely possible with nutrition therapy.
We will also ask you to add your medical providers to a release of information so that we may communicate with them about your nutritional progress and goals with your dietitian. If there are any concerns, we will work with the other providers on your team to ensure everything is safe.
-
There is a lot that nutrition can do to positively impact hormonal balance and reproductive health. We have dietitians who specialize in many areas of women’s health and will explore all areas of concern with you. We will work closely with your medical team and review labs and progress notes to make recommendations for things that may help improve symptoms.

The inflammation in our bodies can have a lot to do with our intake and how we feed ourselves. Of course, nutrition is not the only culprit for inflammation, and your dietitian will work with your medical providers and help you understand how much of your inflammation may be impacted by nutrition.
There are individuals who may not have inflammation on labs, but feel they are at high risk and want to be proactive. In this case, your dietitian can work with you to determine a sustainable, healthy diet, that feels complete and enjoyable.
