What is anxiety?

It is normal to feel worried or nervous from time to time. Anxiety is a normal human reaction to stressful situations. For individuals with anxiety disorders, these feelings are not temporary, but persisting and can get worse over time.

It is important to seek therapy support for anxiety if it is impairing your ability to function at work, school, and in social situations. Anxiety can also interfere with your relationships.

Research supports behavioral treatment, alone or in combination with medication, is a highly effective treatment for most people with an anxiety disorder.

Types of anxiety disorders

  • Generalized anxiety disorder

    • Persistent and excessive worry about a number of different things. May worry more than what seems warranted about actual events or may expect the worst, even when there is no apparent reason for concern.

  • Panic disorder

    • Experiencing spontaneous seemingly out-of-the-blue panic attacks and are very preoccupied with fear of recurring attack which may cause the person to change or restrict their normal activities. Panic attacks may happen suddenly, without warning.

  • Phobias

    • People with specific phobias, or strong irrational fear reactions, work hard to avoid common places, situations, or objects even though they know there is no threat or danger. The fear may not make sense, but they may feel powerless to stop it. Phobias can disrupt daily routines, limit work efficiency, reduce self-esteem, and more.

  • Social anxiety disorder (aka social phobia)

    • Intense fear of being judged, negatively evaluated, or rejected in a social or performance situation. As a result, they may avoid social situations, have a hard time making friends, worrying for days before a social event, and feeling shaky, sweaty, or nauseous when spending time in a social setting.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

    • Characterized by persistent, uncontrollable feelings and thoughts (obsessions) and routines or rituals (compulsions).

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

    • A serious potentially debilitating condition that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It is not unusual to have flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories that interfere with a person’s everyday routine for months or years after the traumatic experience.
